Personal Broadband Australia Completes Successful Interoperability Testing Of iBurst With UTStarcom's Total Control 1000 PDSN System

Mobile Wireless Broadband Ready for Launch in Late 2003

SYDNEY, Australia and ALAMEDA, Calif., Nov 05, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via Comtex/ -- Personal Broadband Australia (PBBA), a wireless broadband access service provider to ISPs, carriers, enterprises, and mobile operators, and UTStarcom (Nasdaq: UTSI), a global leader in IP access networking and services, today announced the successful completion of interoperability testing of PBBA's iBurst service utilizing UTStarcom's Total Control 1000 Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) technology.

These successful tests highlight the readiness of iBurst for commercial launch in Sydney later this year. In the course of the testing, PBBA successfully established iBurst's capacity to provide a reliable, fully ubiquitous, wireless broadband access experience.

"We have demonstrated full IP handover capability, which ensures that Personal Broadband's iBurst service will be truly mobile and operate reliably and consistently at optimum performance levels," said Jonathan Withers, chief technology officer at PBBA.

The iBurst Personal Broadband System is a wide-area wireless data network designed for people to have high-speed mobile Internet access. PBBA has built a network in Sydney covering more than 100 square kilometers, which includes more than 1,000,000 people and 200,000 homes, and plans to develop more base stations to increase coverage over the next six months.

UTStarcom's Total Control 1000 PDSN serves as the point of entry for users into the iBurst packet data network. It identifies and authenticates the mobile users and performs the exchange of packets between mobile stations over the iBurst radio network and other IP networks, such as the Internet and private corporate networks. Working in conjunction with UTStarcom's 4302 Foreign Agent Control Node (FACN), the network is able to offer users uninterrupted access to their data applications as they move throughout the network, via the use of highly advanced mobile IP signalling applications.

"It is rewarding to contribute to the roll out of a revolutionary wireless service with as much potential as iBurst," said Ben Cardwell, managing director of UTStarcom, Australia and New Zealand. "With the Total Control 1000 PDSN, PBBA has implemented a truly seamless experience for their customers, making the system easy to use and efficient to operate."
