ALAMEDA, Calif., March 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UTStarcom Inc., (Nasdaq: UTSI), a leading provider of wireless, wireline and broadband access equipment, today announced the launch of its India R&D center. Located in Gurgaon, on the outskirts of New Delhi, the center is the company's second R&D facility in Asia. The company has an ISO 9001 certified primary R&D center in New Jersey and a regional R&D center at Shenzhen in China.
Speaking at the inauguration of the center, Mr. Hong Lu, Founder President & CEO said, "India is a focus market for UTStarcom. In view of the commitment we have towards the country and the opportunity we see here, we have accelerated our plans for this office." Mr. Lu added, "UTStarcom's aim is to bring the latest and most cost effective technologies to high growth telecommunications markets like India while simultaneously adding value locally through cutting edge development at regional R&D centers like the one at Gurgaon."
According to Dr. Jerry Soloway, Senior Vice-President, Engineering, the R&D center would focus on development for the India market and global R&D initiatives.
Indian Operations
UTStarcom recently commenced operations in India by setting up its South Asia liaison office in Gurgaon in May 2001. The company aims to become a complete solution provider through its major product lines, which cater to the complete switching, wireline and wireless access requirements of basic telecommunications operators. The products lines introduced in India are (i) mSWITCH -- the IP-based softswitch, (ii) PAS -- the company's widely deployed and highly successful wireless access system, and (iii) AN2000 -- the multi-service wireline access platform with narrowband and broadband capability.
UTStarcom has identified India as a focus market and is rapidly investing in expanding the breadth and depth of its operations in India. Less than six months after opening a liaison office in Gurgaon, it decided to invest further and set up a global R&D center in Gurgaon. In the short time that UTStarcom has been in India it has already signed on five of the eight basic service operators in the country as clients. In addition, it has established local manufacture of its AN2000 in association with Himachal Futuristic Communications Limited (HFCL).
